I have a little request.
Would all municipal candidates put on their best bibs and tuckers, be nice to each other and try not to get picked up by the cops.
In the past 30 years of reporting on municipal government, I’ve covered politicians getting nabbed for drunk driving, shoplifting, fraud, violating federal immigration laws, corrupting a minor, numerous assaults and putting dead people and cows on the voters’ list.
My all time favorite was Oshawa Alterman Larry Dupui. He was nabbed for fishing out of season.
I’ve witnessed a candidate smoking pot at an election forum, while another political hopeful was forced to withdraw from the race after attempting to kill his wife.
Another favorite was a Pickering candidate. Despite being accompanied on the campaign trail by three hookers from North Bay, he lost the election.
I’ve got to admit: No judge has thrown the book at a politician in York Region for a very, very long time. I sort of hoped someone in Aurora would have called the cops considering all the hooting, hollering, swatting and name-calling at the council table.
