When he competes in live release angling tournaments, Dave Chong does so out of a high-performance bass boat using a wide assortment of fishing tackle and high-tech electronic equipment.
While the Aurora resident and veteran competitor, who was the 2002 Chevy Mercury Angler of the Year, feels fortunate to possess those luxuries, he's not one to forget about his angling roots.
Particularly during the time he was learning the nuances of the sport as a youngster.
As a means of paying back, Chong and a group of his angling cohorts will volunteer their time June 23 to take 60 Little Brothers/Sisters from York Region along with their respective Big Brother/Big Sister for a few hours of fishing.
The outing is part of the 2007 Catch a Dream kids fishing derby on Lakes Simcoe and Couchiching.
This marks the third straight year Chong and his tournament cohorts have offered their assistance.
"This is a phenomenal opportunity for many of us as tournament anglers to give back to the sport that we all love by introducing a child to the joy of fishing," Chong said. "Talk to anyone who participated last year or in 2005 and you'll realize how rewarding an experience this can be."
With the emphasis on creating a fun and friendly atmosphere for participants, the outing will also include a weigh-in and barbecue.
Last year's event also raised $3,000 for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of York Region.
"We hope to top that figure this year with the help of our generous sponsors and friends," he said.
Chong is seeking assistance from other anglers who have boats as well as potential sponsors. Those who have already signed on include FISHHARDDREAMBIG.COM, Siltec Design, WillTrade Commodities, Top Bass Fishing Series, CPAA, CBAF, Exposures Plus, Bass Pro Shops, CSFL, OFAH, Johnson Outdoors, Spida Communications, Strike Zone Baits, Mizmo Bait Company, Extreme Angler TV, BASS TALK, Strike King, Yamaha Motor Canada and Mitten Vinyl Inc.
"It would be nice if we can make this truly a day to remember for the kids," he said.
