Thursday, April 6th -Go outside tonight as it gets dark. The first quarter moon is only about 3 degrees from the beautiful planet Saturn. This pairing is easily visible in binoculars. Those of you with modest telescopes will find it easy to look at Saturn and its rings and then move up to see the moon at its best! (Click on sky chart to enlarge)
Astronomers love to look at the moon when it is at first quarter or last quarter. The sun is shining on the moon from the side, creating long shadows wherever there are mountains. If you want the maximum 3-d effect, look at the moon from now and through the next couple of days.
