The Moon is one of those things that connects humanity. Throughout history, we've gazed at our closest cosmic neighbour and seen the same face. In July of 1969 the world joined as one to witness the first steps of humans on the moon.
I'm reminded of this every time I look up at the full moon. This weekend, take another look. The lunar map depicted here shows where we've landed people in the past. In addition to the Apollo landings you can see where a number of lunar probes have set down. Humanity plans to set foot there again in a few years. The United States is aiming for flights starting in the early part of the next decade with an aim to a landing around 2014 to 2018. China has announced an intensive lunar exploration program and Russia is likely to be on its way too, most likely as a collaboration with the U.S.
